Japan Had Only One Gunshot Fatality in 2021, Among the Lowest Gun Crime Rates in the World

Japan has very strict gun control laws and is known to have one of the lowest gun crime rates in the world. In 2021, only one person died from a gunshot, demonstrating the country’s effective regulation of firearms.

According to a report from the website “nippon.com” on the 8th, Japan’s gun control policies are very stringent, and gun-related incidents not involving organized crime are extremely rare. The assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in broad daylight was an unprecedented event that shocked the nation.

On July 8, 2022, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot while giving a speech in Nara. He was subsequently rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. According to data from the National Police Agency, Japan experienced 10 gunshot incidents in 2021, 8 of which were related to organized crime groups, and only one person died from a gunshot. In the five years from 2017, the maximum number of gunshot fatalities in a single year was 4.

The news of Shinzo Abe’s assassination shocked Japan, as the country has long been known for its strict gun control and extremely low rates of gun violence. Nancy Snow, Japan’s representative on the International Security Industry Council, stated that this incident would forever change Japan’s security landscape.

On the same day, Abe was shot during his speech in Nara and passed away at the age of 67 after receiving medical treatment.
